What qualifications will needs assessors have? It’s a question that we’ve had for months now. And yesterday, at a hearing of parliament’s Joint Standing Committee on the NDIS, we got a little closer to the answer. In response to questions from Green’s Senator Jordan Steele-John, NDIA Deputy CEO Aaron Verlin said: 1️⃣They will be hiring 80 allied health professionals to train and accredit needs assessors. 2️⃣The needs assessors themselves will *not* necessarily be allied health professionals. Instead, the NDIA spoke of hiring people on the basis of soft skills, like the ability to engage with people with disability. Some assessors may have a background in allied health, but it won’t be a requirement. Interestingly, this is quite different to the eligibility criteria on the Centre for Disability Studies’ I-CAN website, which says assessors must be an allied health professional, nurse, behaviour support practitioner or hold an education degree. There is a note that people who don’t meet these requirements can contact the team to discuss their experience, but this will be reviewed ‘on a case-by-case basis’. 3️⃣The NDIA is working with the University of Melbourne to develop training for accrediting needs assessors. | 39 comments on LinkedIn
