Banter Booster #23: Useful tools and resources for speech pathologists
Welcome to Banter Booster! I’m David, and here’s how I felt joining a new running group composed of ‘triathletes’ at dawn on Sunday:
Not fitting in is my superpower!
We’ve collected lots of useful tools and resources for you this week:
FREE therapy resources for science vocabulary, for Iraqi & Syrian Arabic-speaking families, and for swallowing
FREE training opportunities about legal capacity & supported decision-making, reading, and brain science
Tool of the week: Think, then Write Workbook 2: explicit instruction for paragraph-writing, descriptive writing, and personal recounts
Private practice tips about psychological safety at work and restrictive practices
Open-access research/summaries about reading science, comprehension strategies & knowledge, Long COVID & language, and echolalia
Client and other perspectives on learning disorders, boredom, and remembering a talented, brave activist who was right all along.
Let’s sprint - or at least jog purposefully!
Free Therapy Resources
Too busy listening to tweet! #SSSR2023 - but will attempt to share some treasures. Here’s one - by Michael Kennedy - improving vocab instruction for science teachers to improve outcomes for students with disabilities. Check out the resources!

Free Training Opportunities
I thought I knew enough about legal capacity & supported decision-making for people with disability. But I was wrong! For Australian #SLP#SLPeepsP#SLP2Bother health & education professionals in the same boat, I learned a lot from these free resources ⬇️

Just listened to this, I think the SLT/P world agrees we need to move on from the Broca and Wernicke terminology? Interesting conversation, thanks to @smwilsonau for another great podcast 👏 #language#neuroscience#aphasia

Today the @DRC_AU has published a report titled Restrictive practices: A pathway to elimination. The report says #restrictivepractices are a significant form of violence and coercion at odds with the human rights of people with disability. bit.ly/3O808LX#DisabilityRC

Open-Access Research & Summaries
Applause:
I don't do icebreakers. I literally refuse to participate (on Zoom I just shut off my camera and hit mute) and politely explain that I find them demeaning and beneath the dignity of serious professionals. Ironically this serves the "getting to know you" function quite well.

Neuroscientist Reid Lyon offers 10 maxims about what we know about how children learn to read: bit.ly/3Kf3WtS. The research support for these claims is here: bit.ly/3rNCPQf (pdf)

Great piece! Comprehension strategies strangely get such a bad rap despite the evidence base. It’s possible to read & discuss complex texts daily across subjects that build knowledge, vocabulary & language AND model/practice/deploy strategies. Full integration is the sweet spot. https://

“Nobody is entitled not to be bored. Unless you find ways of accepting that, you’re likely to have a hard time. Yet in our climate of immediate gratification & continual stimulation, coping with tasks that are inherently boring is becoming a lost art.”

Sinead …
You bared your soul…
Shared your brilliance
Through exquisite artistry
Your incredible voice..
Fierce and fragile
Lioness and lamb
Sweet singing bird
Keenly tuned
Trembling..
Tip-toeing along the high wire
Or stamping the ground
Raw
Wounded
Fearless …— Annie Lennox (@AnnieLennox)
