How to support children who stutter and prevent bullying | UTS: Australian Stuttering Research Centre posted on the topic | LinkedIn

Be bold. Be kind. Speak up. Children who stutter are at high risk of being teased or bullied simply because of the way they speak. Even one incident can leave lasting emotional scars—sometimes remembered decades later. Bullying isn’t always obvious. It can happen quietly, outside the classroom, and many children choose not to speak up for fear it will make things worse. That’s why it’s vital for parents, teachers, and peers to work together. Parents: ✅ Check in with your child regularly about reactions from others. ✅ Reassure them you’ll address it with the school. ✅ Communicate concerns quickly to teachers. ✅ Keep an open dialogue with your child and the school. Teachers: ✅ Act immediately—one incident may not be the only one. ✅ Follow your school’s anti‑bullying policy. ✅ Protect and reassure the student throughout. ✅ Monitor interactions inside and outside the classroom. ✅ Involve parents and support services when needed. Speech Pathologists: ✅ Support students’ resilience, self-advocacy and communicative. ✅ Work with teachers and parents to develop strategies that reduce bullying risk. ✅ Advocate for a safe and inclusive environment. Check out the free resource on our website, share it with teachers to support them in the classroom: https://lnkd.in/d_SAY7d9 💡 Together, we can create safe, supportive, inclusive spaces where every child feels heard. #stuttering #bullyingweek #speakup #bullyingnoway #stutter #support
